Zen realization on some sudden noise, or sight etc.

Normally the spiritual current has to be maintained, because the substratum (seedbed) is still disturbed.  The moment conscious control is lost, the surface becomes overwhelmed by the uprush from the depths, and from outside.  But when the current becomes habitual, it gradually affects the seedbed, which becomes occasionally calm.  In samadhi both top and lower are calm.  But it is expected that when the meditation is broken, the seedbed will again show its disturbed nature.  Calm on both levels is maintained only by constant effort, now becoming however habitual.  After a good time, one day or night when there is calm on both levels, the top level is disturbed by the sudden incident.  But to the surprise of the meditator, though there is distraction, the seedbed continues in unbroken calm without any effort.

Now, no disturbance of top level can affect the calm of the lower level.

Compare in classical harmony, all the rules of harmony can be disregarded over a continuous pedal bass sustained note, which musically holds everything together and prevents a feeling of confusion.
